This a First Nations-led, student-centred program, in which a team of five Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students of the Murrup Barak, Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development at the University of Melbourne in Australia, are on a journey together through experiences of First Nations’ exhibitions and collections, including expert conversations with First Nations leaders on Indigenous knowledges, material culture, art and place.
The students – Maggie Blanden, Nicholas Currie, Ethan Savage, Jessica Alderton, and Shanysa McConville – have collaborated to create a video documentary, Warriors, on the season theme ‘Who are we now?’. The premiere of Warriors at Kings College, London, will be followed by a moderated Q&A with the filmmakers. The film will be livestreamed for a limited time after the event.
Murrup Barak, Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development takes its name from the Woiwurrung language. ‘Murrup Barak’ means the Spirit of Barak. The name was chosen to honour the memory of the visionary Aboriginal leader William Barak. The name reflects our respect for Indigenous cultures and knowledge and our vision for an Institute that makes an enduring contribution to Indigenous Australia through the transformative impact of education and employment in the context of Australia’s leading University in teaching, learning, research and employability.
