Overview

Colour from the Australian Desert is an exhibition of contemporary Aboriginal art taking place at JGM Gallery in Battersea, London, from 29 September 2021 until 13 November 2021.

The exhibition features work by 7 Warlpiri artists: Biddy Yulngarri Long, Judy Martin, Kitty Simon, Ms L. Hargraves, Myra Patrick Herbert, Rosie Napurrula Tasman and Ursula Napangardi Marks.

All 24 vibrant paintings are rich in symbolic shapes and mark making. They depict a bird’s-eye view of the artists’ ancestral Country and the Dreaming stories for which they are custodian.

JGM Gallery was founded by Australian-born Jennifer Guerrini Maraldi, a leading light in contemporary Aboriginal art.

For the Colour from the Australian Desert exhibition, JMG Gallery would like to thank Warnayaka Arts & Culture in Lajamanu for their assistance and collaboration, as well as all seven artists based at the art centre: Biddy Yulngarri Long, Judy Martin, Kitty Simon, Ms L. Hargraves, Myra Patrick Herbert, Rosie Napurrula Tasman and Ursula Napangardi Marks.

Most of the seven artists, all women, born in their ancestral lands, were traditional desert walkers across their Country, in the central desert region of Australia. They are now elders, playing a key role in the transmission of Warlpiri knowledge and culture to future generations.
