Featuring leading artist Alix Marie, Photoworks (UK) Director Shoair Mavlian and Assistant Curator Raquel Villar-Pérez, Ballarat International Foto Biennale Artistic Director and CEO Fiona Sweet.
An in-conversation event, discussing the creation and presentation of Alix’s new work Styx. The event will also explore the relationship between two international photographic festivals – Photoworks (UK) and the Ballarat International Foto Biennale (AUS).
In this world premiere body of work, Alix Marie draws on the myth of Styx to explore water deities and their contemporary manifestations, the intersection between the body and its representation, alongside experimenting with the expanded possibilities of photography.
Alix Marie (b.1989) is a multi-disciplinary French artist based in London. Her work explores our relationship to bodies and their representation, with a particular interest in addressing gender stereotypes while mixing mythological references with autobiographical elements. Recent exhibitions include: Photoworks Festival Propositions for Alternative Narratives 2020, Sucer La Nuit at Musée des Beaux Arts Le Locle (solo, 2019) and Shredded at Roman Road (solo, 2019). In 2019 she was awarded the Vic Odden Award by the Royal Photographic Society for a notable achievement in the art of photography by an artist aged 35 or under.
A prominent and highly respected arts director, Fiona Sweet is renowned for inspiring and intelligent delivery of uniquely curated festivals and exhibitions. Currently, Fiona is the Creative Director of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, Australia’s leading contemporary photographic event.
Photoworks champions photography for everyone. We are an international platform, global in reach, and have provided opportunities for artists and audiences since 1995. We do not have a physical venue, but our online channels are always open. Our programme brings new experiences to audiences and opens up new ways to encounter photography. Photoworks is a registered charity and the only organisation with a national remit for photography in England. Our work is supported by public funding through Arts Council England’s National Portfolio.
